Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna is confident it is only a matter of time before the Gunners wrap up a deal for Mykhailo Mudryk.
The Shakhtar Donetsk winger is Arsenal’s top January transfer target with the club submitting two offers in recent weeks that have been rejected.
The Ukraine international wants to make the move to north London however with reports suggesting he has already verbally agreed a five-year deal with Arsenal, eager to join Mikel Arteta’s side ahead of Chelsea who have also registered their interest.
Mudryk has travelled to Turkey with the Shakhtar squad for a training camp ahead of the resumption of the Turkish top flight but the 22-year-old is still expected to join Arsenal before the January window closes.
Former Gunners right-back Sagna believes Shakhtar will continue to push for a bigger fee for their prized asset who they value at £85m. But he remains confident a deal will be done soon, insisting the current stand-off is part of normal ‘mind games’ between negotiating clubs.
‘He’ll be joining the club. I think football transfers are a mind game between the buyer and the seller,’ Sagna told Lord Ping.
‘Shakhtar knows the quality of the player and they know that Arsenal really want him. I think it will happen, but maybe at the end of the window.’
He continued: ‘Shakhtar will keep pushing and negotiating until the end to get the largest amount for their player, but they will be aware of the players desire to join the club and they won’t want to frustrate the player.
‘It is also a massive opportunity for them to make a significant sale which can be invested in other players. I’m convinced the deal will happen. Of course, Arsenal fans would like it to happen sooner rather than later because he will be a massive addition to the club.’
Arsenal remain top of the Premier League but Arteta is eager to bolster his attacking options to maintain that title charge with Gabriel Jesus sidelined until March.
Having tracked Mudryk’s progress in recent years, Sagna believes the winger, equipped with ‘scary speed’ will be a superb addition to the squad.
‘I’ve seen clips of him. I’ve been following his career since he was nineteen because I like to discover players. I first saw him in 2020, when he wasn’t involved with the Shakhtar first team – I think it was a Ukrainian under 20’s game.
‘I liked the way he played. He has great agility and you can definitely tell he is a good player. Technically, he is very good and his speed is scary – it is like he can fly. He is that quick with the ball.’
