‘He’d leave a stud on me’ – Wayne Rooney recalls how England star Jude Bellingham bullied him while at Birmingham as he urges Manchester United to snap up Borussia Dortmund midfielder

Wayne Rooney has lifted the lid on how Jude Bellingham left his mark on him… by studding him at every opportunity he got.

The 37-year-old has recalled how the Borussia Dortmund midfielder left a lasting impression on him when the pair played against each other in the Championship.

Playing for Birmingham during the 2019/20 campaign, Bellingham pitted his wits against Rooney‘s Derby.

And the current DC United manager has revealed how the 19-year-old wasn’t afraid at getting stuck in.

His single season in the senior team at St Andrew’s led to a switch to Signal Iduna Park, where he has become one of the world’s brightest talents.

Named in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the World Cup, Bellingham is expected to play a key role in Qatar where he could play in a double-pivot alongside Declan Rice.

Speaking on Friday’s talkSPORT Breakfast about the teenager, Rooney said: “I played against Bellingham when he was at Birmingham and I was at Derby.

“And he actually man-marked me during the game, I think he was about 16, maybe just 17, and what I really liked about him is every time I passed the ball off, he’d leave a stud in on me.

“And I remember thinking, ‘he’s got something about him’, and just to show the character to go out to Germany and take that league by storm.

“That mentality to perform, obviously he’s been captain in quite a few of the games as well, he’s going to be a huge player for England.

“Just that mentality, even though he’s young, he can put some of that character into some of the rest of the squad in my eyes.”

Rooney then urged former employers Manchester United to reignite their interest in the youngster after failing to sign him in 2020.

Pressed on whether the Red Devils should be targeting him, Rooney remarked: “I hope so! I hope he doesn’t go to Liverpool or [Manchester] City!

“But I’m sure they’re doing their work, he’s probably the hottest youngster in world football at the minute.

“I’m sure United are looking at that as well, I know they tried to get him a couple of years ago, so I’d hope so.

“He’s a player that United could really do with at the minute.”
