Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has rubbished claims that Steven Gerrard deliberately skied a penalty to get Roy Hodgson sacked in January 2011.
But the ex-Reds defender did admit that his former manager just ‘wasn’t right for the club’ during his six-month spell at Anfield.
It’s been almost 11 years since ex-Liverpool captain Gerrard blazed a penalty over the bar against Blackburn at Ewood Park as the Merseyside outfit suffered a 3-1 defeat.
After the game, accusations that the Liverpool skipper purposely missed his spot-kick to get Hodgson sacked began to circulate.
Hodgson, who got the job after impressing at Fulham, had won just 13 of his 31 games in charge and looked to be on borrowed time before the match with Liverpool just four points off the relegation zone.
And Carragher has finally debunked any assumption Gerrard purposely missed his effort from 12 yards out in an attempt to send Hodgson packing.
Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Carragher said: “No. That is not true. No nothing like that. I felt sorry for him.”
Hodgson had inherited a tricky situation at Anfield, with the club in decline since the latter part of former manager Rafa Benitez’s reign.

And Carragher explained that whilst the club’s players weren’t out to get him, Liverpool were ultimately not the right club for Hodgson given his style of football.
Carragher stated: “Roy had a tough time at the club.
“He just wasn’t the right manager for the club and they moved him on for about six months.
“He just didn’t get the club, he didn’t say the right things in the press.
“He was too defensive for Liverpool. Not just for Liverpool but any top club.”
Before adding: “He had success in his career playing that way and he wasn’t going to change that when he was in his sixties – it was just the wrong appointment.”
Liverpool finally return to competitive football on Thursday night when they face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Round of 16.
