‘He can offer something different’ – Nigel Winterburn urges Arsenal to sign Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic

Nigel Winterburn believes Dusan Vlahovic could be an excellent signing for Arsenal this January as the Fiorentina striker ‘can offer something different’ to Mikel Arteta’s current attacking options.

Arsenal are prioritising a move for a goalscoring centre-forward as they prepare for the possible departures of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with the latter recently stripped of the captaincy and frozen out by Arteta.

Vlahovic is firmly on Arsenal’s radar after a barnstorming start to the Serie A season – with the Serbian netting 18 times in 20 appearances – and recent reports indicated the Gunners had offered Fiorentina £45.8million plus Lucas Torreira for their prized possession.

However, it’s understood Vlahovic would prefer to remain in Italy and join either Juventus or Inter Milan, who are battling it out with Arsenal for the 21-year-old’s signature this winter.

‘We’re being linked with a lot of young strikers but I do like Vlahovic from Fiorentina because he looks like he can offer something different,’ ex-Arsenal full-back Winterburn told Paddy Power.

‘He scores all sorts of goals. He takes penalties, he scores from close range, and from the edge of the box. He’s left-footed and looks powerful and strong.

‘There seems to be a big push from Arsenal and he’s the one name that keeps coming up.

‘It will be interesting to see how that develops but like everything, if he does come to Arsenal, I’m only interested in what he does when he’s at our football club. He would be an interesting signing.’

It’s understood Arsenal are also keen on Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak and Winterburn reckons signing either striker would prove a ‘difficult’ task.

However, Winterburn feels strengthening up front will be key if Arsenal are to assert themselves as a genuine force at the top end of the Premier League again.

‘Regarding Dominic Calvert-Lewin and someone like Alexander Isak, we have to ask if they’ll improve Arsenal based on their goal scoring record,’ the former England international added.

‘Those guys are obviously contracted to other clubs so it makes it difficult.

‘But the question is: will they provide 20 goals a season? Because that’s what Arsenal need.’

Winterburn’s former Arsenal team-mate, Ian Wright, has been similarly impressed by Vlahovic and is confident things could ‘start to happen’ should the club have a big January transfer window.

‘I believe they do need to get another striker, even if everything can be sorted with Aubameyang,’ Wright recently said on Optus Sport’s The Kelly and Wrighty Show.

‘I’m hearing Vlahovic from Fiorentina. We need that player who can be between Lacazette and Aubameyang.

‘I don’t know what’s happening with Laca, I’d love him to stay.

‘I don’t know what’s happening with him, and we don’t know what’s happening with Aubameyang.

‘But if we can get that striker, that hard-running striker who is good at the link-up play and is a good finisher – which Vlahovic is – then you’re starting to think it’s starting to happen now for Arsenal.’
