Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka get chance to impress in first match without Cristiano Ronaldo – how Man United could look in Carabao Cup clash against Burnley

A number of Manchester United players will get the chance to impress Erik ten Hag when the club face Burnley on Wednesday.

Domestic football returns for the Red Devils with the Carabao Cup Round of 16 – and they will spring back into action against a former rival.

Man City legend Vincent Kompany has guided the Clarets to the top of the Championship and they travel to Old Trafford in scintillating form.

While second-tier action has resumed, Premier League clubs have not kicked a ball in anger since mid-November, before players joined up with their countries for an unprecedented winter World Cup.

Qatar 2022 only concluded on Sunday – and United defenders Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were both involved in Argentina’s dramatic victory over France in the final.

That said, Ten Hag can name several stars who featured in the earlier stages of the tournament.

Captain Harry Maguire lost his place in the United starting XI before the World Cup – but enjoyed a promising tournament for England as they were knocked out in the quarter-finals.

He could get a chance to prove himself in the absence of Varane and Martinez, while Netherlands full-back Tyrell Malacia and Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen may also play despite recent exploits in Qatar.

Elsewhere, Aaron Wan-Bissaka will hope for an opportunity to reignite his United career with Diogo Dalot suffering an injury while playing for Portugal.

Other notable absentees include Axel Tuanzebe, through injury, and Jadon Sancho, who is yet to link up with the Red Devils this winter due to a combination of physical and mental health.

In better news, Anthony Martial has fully recovered from the fitness issues that blighted the first part of his campaign.

And in case you have been living under a rock, Cristiano Ronaldo does not play for United anymore.

So, here is how the Red Devils could line-up on Wednesday night…
