Harry Kane celebrated with Pedro Porro after setting a new record of 209 Premier League goals, overtaking Wayne Rooney to become the league’s second all-time leading goalscorer. The goal, which secured Tottenham a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, also saw Kane become the first player to ever score 10 headed goals in a single Premier League season.
Kane expressed his delight at the achievement, telling Premier League Productions: ‘It was tough but really important to get the three points and a clean sheet. Palace are in a good vein of form so we knew it would be difficult. Scoring just on half-time helped and we defended well in the second. So overall a good three points.’
The 29-year-old striker is now just 51 goals behind Alan Shearer’s famous record of 260 goals, and interim manager Ryan Mason added: ‘Harry is just Harry. It is a clinical finish. His overall play was outstanding. He’s a team player but all his individual accolades are well deserved.’
Palace manager Roy Hodgson, who handed Kane his England debut, said: ‘He always scored in my four years previously at Palace. A real talent of a goal from a transitional situation. The way he got the ball and volleyed it into that space. We know how good he is in the air and he showed it again. His moment of brilliance won the game.’ He added: ‘He’s a fine player. What he has done for this club has been enormous. Since he made his debut for England he has gone from strength to strength. He is still a young man and I’m pretty certain Alan needs to be concerned because Harry will be breathing down his neck.’
