Manchester United to Discuss Mason Greenwood’s Future Amidst Transfer Interest
Manchester United officials are reportedly planning to hold talks regarding the future of striker Mason Greenwood. This comes as two European giants, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, express interest in signing the young talent.
The 22-year-old Greenwood is currently on loan at Getafe in Spain, where he has scored three goals in 14 appearances, contributing to the team’s rise to eighth place in LaLiga.
Earlier reports revealed Barcelona’s interest in signing Greenwood, with the Spanish champions prepared to offer £40 million for the former England international. They have even offered him the iconic No. 10 jersey previously worn by Lionel Messi.
In addition to Barcelona, Atletico Madrid has also taken notice of Greenwood following his impressive performance in a 3-3 draw between the two teams last month.
The Athletic claims that Manchester United officials are now ready to discuss Greenwood’s future as they seek to raise funds for transfers. Manager Erik ten Hag is currently limited to loan deals after a big spending spree last summer.
While it is unlikely that Greenwood will have a future at Manchester United, his contract is set to expire in 2025. This opens up the possibility of a permanent exit from the club. One option could be recalling him from his loan at Getafe this month and negotiating a transfer deal with either Barcelona or Atletico. However, it is more likely that Greenwood will complete his loan spell at Getafe until the summer before finalizing a transfer.
Greenwood’s loan club, Getafe, stands to benefit from the interest in him as they are entitled to 20 percent of any transfer fee received for the player.
Greenwood will return to action with Getafe on Tuesday afternoon as they host Raya Vallecano. They will then face Espanyol in the Copa del Rey on Saturday, followed by matches against Osasuna and Real Madrid later in the month.
