Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is reportedly “delighted” at the prospect of returning to the club, but the decision is not in the hands of manager Erik ten Hag. Greenwood was suspended by the club in January 2022 following charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive and controlling behaviour, which were later dropped in February. The club is currently conducting an internal investigation into the matter. Ten Hag has previously stated that the decision on Greenwood’s return will not be made by him, but he and most of the team would welcome him back if the club agrees.
Greenwood is said to be eager to resume his career, whether with Manchester United or elsewhere, having not played since the allegations surfaced. However, his potential return has sparked controversy, with reports suggesting that both the men’s and women’s teams are concerned about his reinstatement. Manchester United is also reportedly considering sending Greenwood out on loan next season, with Spain, Italy, and Turkey among the likely options.
TalkSPORT’s Simon Jordan has backed a loan move for Greenwood, stating that it would give him an opportunity to play football and take him out of the spotlight. Jordan also acknowledged the hypocrisy of companies like Nike, who distance themselves from reputational damage while ignoring other issues. Greenwood still has two years left on his £75,000-a-week contract and has been on full pay since his suspension. The Sun reported in April that Greenwood had told friends he would never play for the club again. He has scored 35 goals in 129 games for Manchester United.
