Graham Potter fails to inspire Chelsea revival on debut as RB Salzburg snatch draw in Champions League – ‘He has a lot of work to do’

Graham Potter’s debut as Chelsea manager ended in disappointment as RB Salzburg snatched a 1-1 draw in the Champions League.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for a dominant Blues side at the start of the second-half – but sloppy defending allowed Noah Okafor to equalise for the Austrian champions.

Chelsea suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb last week – which was followed by the surprise sacking of manager Thomas Tuchel.

But there was to be no immediate revival under ex-Brighton boss Potter, who already faces an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.

Chelsea are rock bottom of Group E after two matches, ahead of a double header against leaders AC Milan.

Ex-Blues defender Scott Minto said: “If it was a boxing match, I’d give it to Chelsea on points. But they didn’t do enough.

“Potter would give that a six out of ten. There is clearly a lot of work to do.”

The new Blues boss opened up with an unusual, fluid formation and his side dominated possession in the first-half but failed to create meaningful chances.

Sterling netted his fourth Chelsea goal in eight games with a curling effort after fine work from Reece James down the left-hand side.

But the Blues were undone by an uncharacteristic Thiago Silva error.

The veteran defender went to ground unnecessarily and allowed Junior Adamu to cross for Okafor to slide home an equaliser.

Potter used the maximum five changes and Chelsea created a number of excellent chances to win the game in the final ten minutes – but there was no fairytale Champions League debut for the Englishman.
