Graeme Souness questions Arsenal summer signing Kai Havertz

Graeme Souness has questioned Arsenal summer signing Kai Havertz and admits he is surprised Chelsea fetched £65m for the Germany international. Havertz has signed a five-year year contract with Arsenal after swapping Stamford Bridge for the Emirates Stadium.

The 24-year-old spent three seasons at Chelsea, scoring 19 goals in 91 league games and netting the winner in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City.

Havertz leaves a Chelsea team that finished just 12th in the Premier League last season and joins an Arsenal side that challenged for the title.

Souness Surprised by Arsenal Move for Havertz

Souness insists he was surprised by Arsenal’s move for Havertz and says Chelsea’s poor form last term does not excuse his underwhelming performances.

‘I don’t think anyone would have spent £65m for Kai Havertz based on what we’ve seen from him over the last couple of years at Chelsea,’ Souness told the Sky Bet Fan Hope Survey.

‘Mikel Arteta must feel that he can improve Havertz because he wasn’t a £65m player last year. Maybe I’m being tough on him because he was in a struggling Chelsea team, but good players still turn up whether their team is struggling or not.’

Arsenal Look to Win Title Next Season

Arsenal have also signed England midfielder Declan Rice and Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber this summer as they look to go one better and win the title next season.

Following his arrival at the Emirates, Havertz said: ‘It’s super exciting for me to be joining this amazing club and to be part of the Arsenal family. This club has such a big history, and I hope we can achieve lots of things.

‘The mentality in the Arsenal squad is very high and you can feel that. That was one of the reasons why it has been so hard to play against Arsenal recently.

‘The aim is to win trophies and I’m going to give everything to do that for the supporters and everyone at the club. I’m now looking forward to meeting all the players and the staff when we come back for pre-season.’
