Graeme Souness Slams Tottenham, Harry Kane

Date:

Graeme Souness has labelled Harry Kane ‘weak’ and ’embarrassing’ following an interview reflecting on Tottenham’s difficult season. Spurs were thrashed 6-1 by Newcastle United last Sunday, five goals down inside 21 minutes with Cristian Stellini relieved of his role as interim boss the following day. Tottenham found themselves two goals down at half-time against Manchester United on Thursday but rallied in the second-half with Ryan Mason’s side recovering to secure a 2-2 draw in north London. Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool, Kane insisted his side had recovered a bit of pride with that second-half performance as he reflected on a tumultuous season for the club.

Souness was not convinced by the interview, however, suggesting it was a PR exercise where Kane ‘knew what questions were coming and how he was going to answer them’. And in his damning assessment of Kane and his Spurs teammates, the former Liverpool midfielder insisted the group have ‘let down themselves and their families down’. He told Sky Sports: ‘I will be polite as I possibly can. When you are a professional footballer player, passion should be with you all the time, desire should be with you all the time. It is not a light switch you flick on and off. ‘Harry came across there as if he’d been media trained, he knew what questions were coming and he knew how he was going to answer them and maybe consulted someone in PR at Spurs.

‘I know I am a certain age and come from a different generation but I find that so weak. I played with players who the important thing in their lives come Friday was what happened on the Saturday and they went out there like that was it. Everything is on the next 90 minutes. ‘These players today when they are interviewed, they are media trained and the supporters do not want to hear that. ‘Passion and desire for 45 minutes against Man United, what about going back to the first game of the season in August? That is when it starts. You don’t consistently let down supporters like this group of players at Spurs have, they have let down managers, their supporters and ultimately themselves and their own families. ‘I feel embarrassed for him with that comment and I am a big fan of Harry Kane. They are all media trained up to the hilt.’
