Ghana’s Hopes of Reaching AFCON Knockout Stage Hang by a Thread
Ghana’s chances of advancing to the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are still alive, but qualification for the last-16 is no longer in their control.
The Black Stars were expected to easily progress from Group B, but their 2-2 draw with Mozambique has left them in third place behind Egypt and group winners Cape Verde.
However, there is still hope for Ghana as the top four third-placed teams from the group stage will also move on to the knockout phase.
Currently, Ghana is not among the top third-placed teams, so they need several results to go their way in order to advance.
What Ghana Needs to Advance
In order for Ghana to progress, they need Cameroon to draw with Gambia in Group C and also require Zambia to lose to Morocco in Group F. Additionally, they need DR Congo to beat Tanzania in Group F.
Ivory Coast is also waiting to see if they will progress as one of the best third-placed teams. They faced criticism from their own supporters after a 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea in Group A.
Similar to Ghana, Ivory Coast needs Cameroon to avoid a win against Gambia in Group C. They will also advance if Namibia, Algeria, or Zambia lose their final group matches.
