Ghanaian MP Apologizes to Harry Maguire for Political Discredit

A Ghanaian Member of Parliament (MP) has issued an apology to Manchester United star Harry Maguire after using his name to discredit a political rival last year. MP Isaac Adongo made the remarks during a debate on the economic budget, where he compared Ghana’s vice president Mahamudu Bawumia to Maguire, stating that both loved to score political own goals.

Adongo’s comments came during a challenging season for Maguire in 2022/23. However, the defender has experienced a significant turnaround this season, featuring regularly for both his club and the national team.

Adongo referenced Maguire once again, this time to apologize to the footballing superstar while taking another jab at his political rival. Speaking in parliament, Adongo stated, “If you remember last year, I was very quick to compare Mahamudu Bawumia to Harry Maguire. Mr. Speaker, I now apologize to Harry Maguire.”

Maguire’s Transformation

Adongo continued his speech by acknowledging Maguire’s transformation as a footballer. He said, “Today, Maguire has turned the corner and become a transformational footballer. Harry Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United. Mr. Speaker, Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester United, while our Maguire is now roaming at the high heavens with a cup in hand.”

Upon hearing Adongo’s apology, Harry Maguire graciously accepted it and took to social media to respond. He wrote, “MP Isaac Adongo apology accepted. See you at Old Trafford soon,” accompanied by a shaking hands and smiling emoji.
