Mason Greenwood apologises after Jose Bordalas suggests Jude Bellingham played part in Getafe move
Getafe manager Jose Bordalas has apologised for suggesting Jude Bellingham had a hand in Mason Greenwood’s move to the club, saying that is, in fact, not what happened.
Greenwood has joined Getafe on a season-long loan from Manchester United and made his debut for the Spanish side on Sunday, coming on as a late substitute in a 3-2 home win over Osasuna.
After Greenwood made the move to Spain, Bordalas claimed that England and Real Madrid superstar Bellingham played his part by recommending La Liga to the striker.
Bordalas Apologises for Misunderstanding
The coach has now rowed back on that statement, with The Athletic reporting that Bellingham’s entourage were unhappy with the comments, which Bordalas was made aware of, leading to an apology after the match on Sunday.
‘I wanted to clear up a misunderstanding there has been. I said that Mason Greenwood came to Getafe because he had spoken to Bellingham,’ he said.
‘It has been clarified to me that this was not the case. I apologise. Mason arrived in a different way. It was our interest and they offered him to me and we were very interested. I just wanted to clarify that, it was not a bad intention.’
Bordalas Praises Greenwood’s Performance
Bordalas commented on Greenwood’s cameo after he came on in the 77th minute, saying: ‘Mason is a great player, we have a lot of trust in him and I think it will be very positive for Getafe and for Spanish football.
‘We’re pleasantly surprised by him. Today was a difficult game that was very back and forth. He helped us in attack and in defence too.
‘He showed solidarity with his team, and he surprised us [physically]. We are still working with him, as he has gone many months without playing. We will talk this calmly.
‘I imagine today will have been special for him and he will have the satisfaction of feeling like a footballer again. What a footballer wants is to compete, to play.’
Greenwood’s Troubled Recent History
Greenwood was playing his first competitive game since he was suspended by Manchester United on January 30, 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.
The England international faced charges including attempted rape and assault, but the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February that the case had been discontinued.
A lengthy internal investigation then took place at Manchester United and they concluded that Greenwood would be continuing his career elsewhere, with Getafe agreeing a season-long loan deal for the 21-year-old.
Conclusion
Greenwood is now looking to rebuild his career in Spain and Getafe will be hoping he can help them achieve their goals this season. It remains to be seen how much of an impact he can have, but his debut was certainly encouraging.
