A Look Back at Steven Gerrard’s 2006 Documentary
In 2006, a camera crew followed Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard for an entire year, resulting in the Sky One documentary ‘Steven Gerrard: A Year in My Life’. The documentary provided an intimate look into Gerrard’s life on and off the pitch, coming off the back of winning the European Cup in Istanbul and on the way to a FA Cup final that would be heralded as the ‘Gerrard Final’. Sports journalist Ned Boulting worked and narrated the documentary and found himself staying at Gerrard’s mansion and witnessing the different sides of the person behind the revered footballer.
Gerrard’s Greatest Year as a Player
In an interview with This Is Anfield, Boulting described what it was like to be around Gerrard at that time. He stated that this was Gerrard’s greatest year as a player and that he was a funny mixture of things, being both reticent and private, but also aware of his place in the game and his legacy.
The Slow Process of Opening Up
The documentary offered fans a unique insight but Boulting adds another layer to the story, recalling the slow process of a then 25-year-old Gerrard opening up throughout filming. He said that it took probably a month or two before Gerrard allowed them access to his mansion in Formby and that it was always on his terms.
Cheese Sandwiches and Pool Games
Boulting also shared some interesting stories from his time with Gerrard, such as playing pool and making cheese sandwiches in his massive kitchen. He said that Gerrard could be tremendously generous with his time and hospitality, and that he felt he got to know him pretty well over that year.
