Julian Nagelsmann set to become new Germany manager

Julian Nagelsmann – formerly a target for Chelsea and Tottenham – will become the new manager of Germany, according to reports. The former Bayern Munich boss emerged as the early frontrunner for the job following the sacking of Hansi Flick just over a week ago.

Flick was dismissed after a torrid two years in charge, with a humiliating 4-1 friendly defeat to Japan the last straw, with the German FA (DFB) making the call just months before the country host Euro 2024.

Several names were touted for the job, including Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick, though both distanced themselves from the role.

But it appears the DFB have got their man, with Bild reporting that they have reached an agreement with Nagelsmann who has been out of work since his shock sacking at Bayern back in March.

Nagelsmann’s Contract With Bayern Terminated

Complicating matters was that the 36-year-old was still technically contracted to the Bundesliga giants and it was said that they could actually demand a fee from any club that wished to hire him before his deal expired in 2026.

That hitch is thought to have potentially scared off Chelsea, Tottenham and PSG who were all heavily linked with the highly-rated young manager over the summer.

The trio of clubs looked elsewhere in the end, instead appointing Mauricio Pochettino, Ange Postecoglou and Luis Enrique respectively.

Bild report that Nagelsmann’s contract with Bayern has now been terminated, leaving him free to manage Germany, and in the process he has had to forego around £17million of wages he would’ve earned from Munich.

Nagelsmann’s Contract With Germany Only Until Euro 2024

But curiously, his contract with the national team is only set to run until the conclusion of next summer’s Euros, with his future beyond that in the balance.

As the host nation, Nagelsmann need not worry about any qualifiers, with Die Mannschaft set to take on the USA, Mexico and Austria in their remaining 2023 friendlies.

The former Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig boss won the Bundesliga and two German Super Cups at Bayern, winning 60 of his 84 games in charge of the club.

Conclusion

Julian Nagelsmann looks set to become the new manager of Germany after a long search for a replacement for Hansi Flick. The 36-year-old was still technically contracted to Bayern Munich but his contract has now been terminated and he will take charge of Die Mannschaft until Euro 2024. It remains to be seen what happens beyond that but for now, Nagelsmann looks set to take Germany into their home tournament next summer.
