Georgia Bulldogs Add Experienced Quarterback Jayden Maiava from UNLV
In a surprising move, the Georgia Bulldogs have acquired an experienced quarterback, Jayden Maiava, through the transfer portal. Maiava, who was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year, led the conference in QB rating and yards per pass attempt. He also had an impressive rushing record. Georgia beat out USC for Maiava’s commitment, despite USC being the favorite due to location and the departure of their starter, Caleb Williams. Maiava’s visit to Georgia was kept under wraps until after the fact.
Why did Georgia pursue Maiava?
Kirby Smart, Georgia’s head coach, stated last month that the team ideally wanted four scholarship quarterbacks. However, after Dylan Raiola flipped to Nebraska, they were left with three. Despite having Carson Beck as the returning starter and Gunner Stockton, a top-100 recruit, Georgia wanted to bring in an experienced backup in case something happens to Beck. Additionally, Maiava will provide competition for Stockton to be the No. 2 in 2024 and potentially the starter once Beck leaves.
Maiava’s blend of size and athleticism intrigued the coaching staff, although it remains to be seen if his play can translate to the SEC level. This move is reminiscent of when Georgia added JT Daniels from the portal three years ago, despite already having three scholarship quarterbacks. Smart saw an available quarterback he liked and wanted to add him to the group.
What about Georgia’s other quarterbacks?
Beck will remain the starter, while Brock Vandagriff, the former backup, transferred to Kentucky. Stockton was elevated to the No. 2 role for the Orange Bowl and impressed with his performance. Puglisi, a four-star recruit, practiced with the team during the bowl and received praise from his new teammates and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
Adding Maiava sends a message that Smart is always looking to improve the team. Maiava will have to prove himself in practices and scrimmages, but his previous experience against power-conference teams is promising. Although his interception count is a concern, his completion percentage was second-best in the Mountain West.
In conclusion, the addition of Jayden Maiava brings depth and competition to Georgia’s quarterback position. With their challenging schedule and aspirations of reaching the College Football Playoff, the Bulldogs wanted to ensure they have a capable backup and potential future starter.
