Gary Neville has responded to criticism of Tottenham’s performances this season by warning ex-players to find some perspective. Despite being in fourth place in the table, Spurs have come under fire from former players for their inconsistent performances this season. Neville hit back at the criticism, pointing out that Spurs are currently ahead of Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool in the table. The comments came after former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara stormed out of a talkSPORT studio following comments made by Cristian Stellini about the team’s draw against Everton.
Tottenham threw away another lead on Monday night as they conceded late against a 10-man Everton to draw 1-1, denting their hopes of finishing in the top four. Spurs currently face a fight with Newcastle, Manchester United, Liverpool, Brentford and Brighton to qualify for next season’s Champions League. If they achieve a top-four finish, it will be the fifth time in seven seasons that they have qualified for Europe’s premier club competition.
Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara was incensed by Stellini’s assessment of the draw at Everton, claiming Spurs had ‘played a good game, despite letting slip a 1-0 lead against ten men. O’Hara stormed out of the studio in frustration as co-host Jason Cundy pleaded for him to return. O’Hara’s frustrations boiled over after seeing Spurs let slip an advantage late on for the second game in a row after their 3-3 draw at Southampton last month.
Spurs have come under fire this season from a number of former players for their performances in what has been a topsy-turvy season. Neville hit back at the criticism, claiming those in question should find a level of perspective. Neville tweeted: “Interesting seeing ex-Spurs players that never got near to Champions League places for years when they played for the club saying they can’t watch this current team now. Spurs are in 4th place currently ahead of Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool. Perspective!”
Tottenham’s grip on the top four has loosened with the chasing pack all having games in hand over them, which could see Stellini’s side drop as low as seventh if results go against them. Despite this, Spurs have shown glimpses of their potential this season, with Harry Kane continuing to be a key player for the team. Spurs will be hoping to secure a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League next season, but they will need to improve their consistency if they are to achieve this goal.
