Gary Neville is confident that Chelsea will be able to cause a big surprise next season with the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager. The Argentine is set to return to management after his sacking by Paris Saint-Germain nearly a year ago, and he will be inheriting a club and squad in disarray following an unprecedented spending spree. The Blues are currently languishing in mid-table obscurity and in the midst of a five-game losing streak. Neville believes he saw enough in a goalless draw against Liverpool earlier this month to suggest that a competent and experienced manager would be capable of overseeing a quick turnaround in fortunes.
The former Manchester United defender admitted he championed Pochettino’s cause when the Old Trafford hotseat was vacant last summer and is confident Chelsea have eventually stumbled on the right man to take the club forwards. He believes that Pochettino is a talented coach who is likeable and will be respected by the players, and he has worked with big players at PSG, Tottenham, and Southampton, where he did a great job. Neville is happy that Erik ten Hag was appointed at United, but he believes Pochettino would have been a great choice as well.
