Gary Lineker urges Harry Kane to join Bayern Munich as Tottenham won’t get close to top four

Tottenham and England’s record goalscorer Harry Kane has been urged by Gary Lineker to join Bayern Munich, with the former Spurs striker claiming that the north London club won’t get close to the top four next season.

Kane’s future has been the source of much speculation so far this summer, but now the transfer saga appears to be coming to an end. Bayern have told Spurs that they have until midnight on Friday to accept their £82million offer for the England captain – or the bid will be withdrawn.

Why Kane should leave Tottenham for Bayern Munich

Though he desires to finally win silverware, Kane has a number of personal accolades to his name and has his sights set on becoming the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, as he’s just 47 goals shy of Alan Shearer’s record.

But Lineker believes the 30-year-old must move for the sake of his career, telling SunSport: ‘I think Harry will leave Tottenham – and he should do. I think he wants to go and that they will make it happen. Munich is a lovely city and Bayern are one of the great clubs in world football. If Harry doesn’t win trophies with Bayern then he really must be a jinx.’

‘Alan Shearer is willing to drive Harry to the airport because he wants to keep his Premier League goalscoring record intact. But Harry is already the all-time record scorer for England and Tottenham. The game is about winning team honours rather than individual records and that is what Harry needs. I don’t see Spurs finishing even close to the top four next season.’

Why Spurs should accept Bayern’s offer

Though £82m is a generous offer for a player with just a year left on his contract, it falls short of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s valuation on Kane. He is confident he can convince the talisman to pen a new deal but that will ride on how quickly new manager Ange Postecoglou can get the north London club firing.

Impressive signings have been made, not least Kane’s England teammate James Maddison, but Lineker believes the rebuild will take time and his former club might be better off cashing in while they can.

He added: ‘In no way can you argue that it would be good for Spurs to lose Harry, even in the long-term. It’s not just his goalscoring, but his assists, his all-round game and his leadership qualities. But when he is entering the last season of his contract, then for me it makes sense for Spurs to take £80m or £100m now rather than risk losing him for nothing.’

Can Postecoglou end Tottenham’s trophy drought?

Spurs have a new manager in Ange Postecoglou, who did a great job at Celtic, but they are rebuilding and this job is going to be a major test for him. Can he end Tottenham’s trophy drought? Only time will tell.
