Ange Postecoglou: From Refugee to Tottenham Boss
The story of Ange Postecoglou is one of determination, resilience and success. From being a refugee to becoming the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, Postecoglou has achieved his dreams through hard work and dedication. In an exclusive interview with Gary Lineker, Postecoglou discussed his journey and his hopes for the future.
A Refugee’s Journey
Postecoglou was born in Greece in 1967, but his family were forced to flee their home due to the military dictatorship that had taken control of the country. They eventually settled in Australia, where Postecoglou grew up and began his football career.
Postecoglou recalled his difficult journey, saying: “I was a refugee from a country that was in turmoil. We had to flee and start again. It was tough, but it made me realise that anything is possible if you work hard enough.”
Struggling for Recognition
Despite his talent, Postecoglou struggled to make it as a professional footballer. He was rejected by several top clubs, including Manchester United and Liverpool. However, he refused to give up and eventually signed for South Melbourne in 1989. He went on to become one of the most successful players in the club’s history, winning four league titles and two cups.
Postecoglou said: “I had to fight for recognition. I was told I wasn’t good enough for the top clubs, but I showed them what I could do. It was a great feeling when I finally made it.”
A New Challenge at Tottenham
Postecoglou has now been appointed as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, one of the biggest clubs in England. He is determined to make a success of his new role and hopes to leave a lasting legacy at the club.
He said: “I am honoured to be given this opportunity at Tottenham. I want to build something special here and create a team that can compete at the highest level. I am confident that we can achieve great things together.”
