Gareth Southgate Expresses Ambition to Manage in the Premier League Again
England boss Gareth Southgate has expressed his ambitions to manage in the Premier League again after receiving encouragement from Jose Mourinho. Southgate, who has been in charge of the England national team since 2016, has overseen the team’s best performances since their World Cup victory in 1966.
Success with England
Under Southgate’s leadership, England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and were runners-up in Euro 2020. However, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the recent World Cup in Qatar.
Despite having a contract until December 2024, Southgate acknowledges that the upcoming European Championships in Germany could be his last major competition as England manager. This has fueled his desire to prove himself in club management once again.
Encouragement from Mourinho
Southgate revealed a conversation he had with Jose Mourinho, who was the manager of Manchester United at the time. Mourinho assured Southgate that he would have numerous opportunities in football once he completes his role as England manager.
Southgate’s Premier League Experience
Southgate began his managerial career at Middlesbrough before joining the England set-up. He reflects on his time at Middlesbrough, stating that despite getting relegated in the third year, his first season as a Premier League manager was his biggest achievement.
Southgate remains confident in his current role as England manager but acknowledges that he won’t be in the position for an extended period. He is open to future opportunities and trusts Mourinho’s assessment of his capabilities.
