Gareth Bale told ‘there’s no time for golf’ by Wales boss Rob Page who says ‘relentless’ World Cup schedule means former Real Madrid and Tottenham man will have to focus on football in Qatar

‘Wales, Wales, Wales… in that order’ – that will be Gareth Bale’s new slogan at the World Cup with golf strictly off limits in Qatar.

Dragons boss Rob Page has said there won’t be any time for a round in Doha, despite his star player being continually tied to the sport.

A five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Bale is Britain’s most successful ever football player when it comes to European honours, but he had continual run-ins with the Spanish media who even called him a ‘parasite’.

Things boiled over in 2019 when Bale finally caved into the Madrid-based newspaper’s constant accusations of the former Tottenham man’s commitment.

Upon qualifying for Euro 2020 in November of that year, Bale held up a sign saying ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order’ in reference to a comment a Spanish sports radio host said.

Since that night his relationship deteriorated with the media and then-manager Zinedine Zidane, later returning to Spurs on loan, before leaving permanently for Los Angeles FC this summer.

But, despite his love for the sport, Wales boss Page won’t be having any of it at the World Cup, despite previously being happy for key players to hit the course.

“We had a round of golf planned,” he told the media. “I went to the Doha club, it’s run by a British lad.

Speaking to the media, Page said he used to be happy for his players to get a round in, but not in Doha

“He said, ‘I’ll book you a time’. But it gets dark at four o’clock.

“We looked at it but there are other functions we might have to do, so we will probably not get the chance to do it.”

When asked about Bale specifically, a laughing Page said: “Yeah. There’s no golf. We’re out there to do a job.

“In the past I may get Gareth, Kieffer Moore or Aaron Ramsey come up to me and say, ‘What’s the plan for tomorrow afternoon? Are there meetings?’

“I’d say, ‘No, there’s no meetings, so if you want nine holes then go and play’.

“But that is when you have a week building up to a double-header. Out there, we won’t have enough time.

“Every four days there is a game. It’s relentless.”
