Cody Gakpo Reveals the Goal He Practiced for Years as a Young Footballer
Cody Gakpo, the talented forward for Liverpool FC, has opened up about the crucial goal that he had been rehearsing for years during his youth as a budding footballer. Since joining Liverpool from PSV in January, Gakpo has become an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s talented forward line.
A Goal Worth Years of Practice
Gakpo has scored 11 goals in 40 appearances for Liverpool, including a memorable brace in the 7-0 victory over their rivals, Manchester United, in March. While the second goal from that match is often regarded as the best, Gakpo emphasizes that it was the opening goal that he had worked hardest on.
In an exclusive interview with Liverpool FC’s official website, Gakpo described the goal that broke the deadlock against Erik ten Hag’s side as something he had “practised all my life” due to his experience playing as a winger.
“Before I came here, I played as a winger for about five or six years. Coming from the outside, going inside, and finding the long corner was something I really trained on. I was happy to show everybody that I was capable of doing that,” Gakpo revealed.
Contributing to Liverpool’s Success
The goal Gakpo refers to put Liverpool in front just before halftime, setting the stage for a wave of second-half finishes in front of the Kop. Gakpo’s clever chip over David de Gea added to Liverpool’s dominance in the match.
Similar to his fellow countryman and captain Virgil van Dijk, Gakpo also opened his account for the club in an intense fixture against Everton two weeks earlier.
A Memorable Moment
Gakpo reflects on the significance of his goal against Everton, comparing it to winning a cup final in the Netherlands. He describes the experience as “unreal” and acknowledges the importance of the Merseyside derby.
If Gakpo continues to score against these two particular teams, he is sure to become a fan favorite at Liverpool!
