Arsenal Striker Gabriel Jesus Clarifies Comments About Goalscoring
Forward Gabriel Jesus of Arsenal has clarified his previous comment about goals not being his strong point, stating that it was taken out of context. However, he acknowledges that improving his goalscoring ability is an aspect of his game that he still needs to work on.
The Brazil international failed to score in his team’s 1-0 defeat to Argentina last month, extending his goal drought to just one goal in his last 29 appearances for the Selecao.
Jesus faced criticism and ridicule in Brazil for his statement about goalscoring not being one of his main assets, which is a crucial aspect for a striker.
However, he now explains that his comment was exaggerated and misunderstood. He still believes that he can be a decisive and game-changing forward, even if he is not scoring goals.
In an interview with ESPN Brasil, Jesus said, “It was a moment after a stressful game against a rival. Sometimes we get tired of talking about it, you know? It’s obvious that they’re going to focus on it. I’ve always been honest. I think I said the wrong thing to those people who don’t make the effort to understand.”
“I’ll say it again, but now I think it’s clearer: I don’t think scoring goals or fighting for the top scorer’s honor is my strong point, but I can improve, I want to improve, and I will improve,” Jesus added. “I have other qualities too, but I score goals. I’ve scored goals that have helped the team, I’ve scored hat-tricks.”
Jesus also expressed his frustration with people who only judge his performance based on the result and overlook other aspects of his game. He emphasized that there are always areas to improve, but his coach is satisfied with his contributions.
He concluded by saying, “I understand the real fans who see beyond the goal. But they also want their number 9 to score. And I score, you know? I’m getting better and better. But I also understand my other strengths, which I won’t give up in order to be a goalscorer.”
