Former Fulham Star Kay Voser Opens Up About Cocaine Addiction and Schizophrenia
The Journey of Kay Voser
Kay Voser, a former Fulham player and Swiss defender, recently revealed his struggles with cocaine addiction and schizophrenia during his time at the club. Voser had a successful career prior to joining Fulham, winning three league titles with FC Basel. However, his time at Fulham was plagued with difficulties, leading to his eventual release after just ten league appearances in 18 months.
A “Horror Trip” in London
Voser described his time in London as a “horror trip,” where he had to conceal his fears and psychoses. He shared that his upbringing was tough, with an alcoholic father and a manic depressive mother. Voser himself was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which led him to create a parallel universe where he had a friend who looked just like him. While playing for Basel, he often experienced difficult spells and occasionally turned to excessive drinking.
However, Voser’s problems escalated when he joined Fulham. Even before joining the club, he lost his grip on reality during a holiday in Ibiza with his Basel teammates. This led to a breakup with his girlfriend and a severe bout of depression. Voser struggled to establish himself on the pitch at Fulham and made the mistake of joining the club. His mental state deteriorated, and he found himself being persuaded to take cocaine, which eventually came to light. Although the amounts found in tests were too small to prove his cocaine use definitively, Voser had to fight the case, resulting in legal bills amounting to nearly £100,000.
The Impact of Personal Loss
Voser admitted to lying to Fulham officials about being injured so he could spend time with his mother, who was battling cancer. He prioritized his mother over football, which created resentment from the club. Unfortunately, his mother passed away shortly after, leaving Voser devastated.
Despite his struggles, Voser has managed to continue his football career, playing for Sion, FC Zurich, and the US side Charlotte Independence. He hopes that by sharing his story, he can raise awareness about mental health issues in professional sports.
