Frank Lampard has expressed his surprise at being appointed as Chelsea’s caretaker manager after his return to the club ended in a 1-0 defeat at Wolves. The Blues have now gone three games without scoring and have lost 11 of their league matches this season, leaving Lampard with a big task ahead of him.
Lampard is aware of the challenge he faces and has urged his players to be more aggressive and competitive in their duels if they are to turn their fortunes around. He also warned them not to be worried about the size of the task ahead, with the club set to face defending European champions Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday.
The former Chelsea player was out of a job since January, when he was sacked by Everton, before being appointed on a caretaker basis until the end of the season after Graham Potter was dismissed. Lampard was part of the team when Roberto di Matteo led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2012 as a caretaker before earning the job on a full-time basis.
Lampard is determined to help Chelsea improve and believes that with the right attitude, they can turn their fortunes around. He said: “We know we’re not in a position we want to be in. There’s always a reason for it. I didn’t expect to solve everything in one day. You have to have more aggression in your game, more speed and more competitive duels which go your way. The players need to be aware of that because without that you can’t win games. It’s not stinging criticism, I know there’s a lot of talent there.”
