Professional athletes experience a life of routine, camaraderie, and playing the sport they love. However, retirement can be a difficult transition as they lose their routine, teammates, and sport. Danny Simpson, a former Premier League title winner, is beginning to realize this as he has not played since January 2022 and is already experiencing what life may be like once he retires. Simpson is currently training with Macclesfield Town and has not yet officially retired, but the thought of hanging up his boots scares him. To help raise awareness of retiring athletes’ mental health, Simpson has joined Third EYE Sports Consultancy, a mental health initiative for retiring/retired athletes that provides work opportunities for those planning for life after sport. The consultancy aims to keep these athletes actively involved in the sport they love to prevent any mental health issues involved in post-career life. By becoming part of an initiative that helps to provide these athletes with a possible path into a new career, they will benefit those in need of help.
