Ian Burchnall, assistant coach at Anderlecht, has revealed that he attempted to sign Erling Haaland while managing Norwegian side Viking. However, the move was thwarted by Haaland’s father, Alfie. The 22-year-old ultimately joined Molde, where he worked under former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Haaland has since become the best striker in world football, scoring goals for Borussia Dortmund and RB Salzburg before joining Manchester City last summer, where he has scored 52 goals this season. Even as a teenager, Burchnall says it was clear Haaland was going to become a world beater after hearing rave reviews from scouts and coaches who worked closely with the Norwegian international.
