Liverpool’s former throw-in coach, Thomas Gronnemark, has embarked on a surprising new venture outside of football. After parting ways with the Reds in 2023, Gronnemark has released his debut single, titled C-Complicated Love. The Danish coach revealed that his musical journey actually began during his time at Liverpool, when he made his first “public” music appearance at a pre-season camp in Evian, France. He recalled singing a Bill Withers song during a karaoke session.
Gronnemark’s foray into music started last autumn when he sent his music to Danish top producer Rune Braager. Impressed by Gronnemark’s talent, Braager agreed to collaborate with him on his first single. The experience of entering a recording studio for the first time was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking for Gronnemark, especially as he walked past Gold and Platinum records on the studio walls.
Influenced by artists like Lana del Rey, Sam Smith, and Ed Sheeran, C-Complicated Love is an upbeat pop song that has the potential to become a catchy earworm. Gronnemark’s musical aspirations are not the only notable achievements he has under his belt. In 2010, he broke the world record for the longest throw-in, launching the ball an astonishing distance of 51.33 meters. Although this record has since been surpassed, it remains a remarkable feat in Gronnemark’s career.
During his tenure at Liverpool, Gronnemark made a significant impact on the team’s throw-in game. Jurgen Klopp, the club’s manager, praised Gronnemark’s unorthodox coaching methods in 2019. Despite Gronnemark’s previous world record for the longest throw-in, Klopp emphasized that his influence extended beyond distance alone. The introduction of Gronnemark transformed Liverpool’s throw-ins, expanding their repertoire to include 18 different variations. The ultimate goal was to retain possession of the ball after each throw-in, rather than relying on a mere 50-50 situation.
Given Klopp’s appreciation for Gronnemark’s unconventional approach, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the manager lend his support by listening to Gronnemark’s debut single and sharing it on his Instagram account.
