In the statement, the family expressed their immense pride in Shakespeare’s footballing achievements but emphasized that, to them, he was first and foremost a loving husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. They requested privacy during this difficult time as they try to come to terms with their loss. Shakespeare’s most notable role came during Leicester City’s historic Premier League triumph in the 2015-2016 season, where he served as Claudio Ranieri’s assistant. The team’s unexpected title win captivated the world and remains one of football’s greatest stories. Shakespeare took over as Leicester’s manager in February 2017, following Ranieri’s departure. Despite being appointed permanently in June on a three-year contract, he was sacked in October.
Following his departure from Leicester, Shakespeare joined the club as an assistant under Dean Smith in April 2023. However, after the team’s relegation from the Premier League the following month, he left the club. Throughout his playing career, Shakespeare played as a midfielder for clubs such as Walsall, Sheffield Wednesday, West Brom, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Telford, and Hednesford.
Nigel Pearson, former Leicester City manager and a close friend of Shakespeare, expressed his devastation upon hearing the news. Pearson described Shakespeare as a wonderfully talented, emotionally understanding, calm, balanced, and outrageously funny person. He expressed his admiration and love for Shakespeare, reminiscing about the memorable moments they shared. Pearson concluded by saying that they were the lucky ones for having known Shakey.
