Harry Kane Booked for Diving in England vs Malta Match
England captain Harry Kane received a yellow card for diving during the match against Malta, leaving players and pundits in disbelief.
Dead Rubber Fixture at Wembley
The match took place at Wembley on Friday night as a dead rubber fixture, with England having already qualified for Euro 2024.
Controversial Decision
Gareth Southgate’s team took an early lead thanks to an own goal, and it seemed they would double their advantage when Kane was fouled in the box. However, instead of awarding a penalty, referee Luis Miguel Branco Godinho blew for a free-kick and booked Kane for simulation.
Debate Among Former Players
The decision left Kane and the majority of the Wembley crowd baffled. Former Tottenham striker Jermaine Defoe argued that there was contact and it should have been a penalty, while ex-Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole agreed, stating that Kane had bought the foul. Joleon Lescott also believed it was not a yellow card offense but would not debate if a penalty had been given.
