Liverpool hero Bruce Grobbelaar has named Graham Potter as his preferred choice to succeed Jurgen Klopp as the manager of Liverpool. Klopp recently announced his plan to step down at the end of the season, citing a lack of energy as one of the reasons behind his decision. Despite former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso being the bookmakers’ favorite for the job, Grobbelaar believes Potter would be a better fit for the Reds.
Potter, who had a disappointing six-month spell in charge of Chelsea, is admired by Grobbelaar for his ability to develop youngsters from the academy and integrate them into the first team. The former Brighton manager set up the entire Brighton situation and played a crucial role in their success. Grobbelaar feels that Potter could bring the same approach to Liverpool, especially considering the injuries the team has faced this season.
While Potter’s tenure at Chelsea saw the team drop to 11th in the table, Grobbelaar believes that Liverpool and Chelsea are two different entities with different dynamics and mentalities. Liverpool is known for being a family club that treats its managers well. Grobbelaar is confident that if Potter were to come to Liverpool, he would be welcomed like any other manager who has managed the club.
On the other hand, former Liverpool player Dietmar Hamann believes that Alonso is the outstanding candidate to succeed Klopp. Hamann hopes to see Alonso stay on at Bayer Leverkusen for another season but acknowledges that if Liverpool comes calling, it would be hard for Alonso to turn down the opportunity. Hamann suggests that sometimes big clubs only come knocking once, and if Liverpool does well with their next manager, the job may not be available for several years.
The search for Klopp’s successor is underway, and it remains to be seen who will take charge of Liverpool next season. Both Potter and Alonso have their supporters, and it will ultimately come down to the club’s decision. Liverpool fans will be eagerly awaiting the announcement as they hope for continued success after Klopp’s departure.
