Former Champions League winners in two-horse race to sign Anthony Martial
Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is attracting interest from his former club Monaco and Marseille as his contract with United is set to expire this summer. The 28-year-old Frenchman is currently out injured, but that hasn’t deterred these clubs from pursuing him.
It seems that United have no plans to extend Martial’s deal for another 12 months, which means he will become a free agent in the summer. This move will not only give Martial the chance to return home to France but also allow United to free up some much-needed space on their wage bill.
Martial had hoped to end his eight-year stay at United on a high note, but unfortunately, he has been sidelined until April due to a groin problem. This injury ruled out any possibility of a transfer in the January window, as clubs like Marseille, Fenerbahce, and Saudi Arabian teams had shown interest in signing him.
Since joining United in a £44.5 million deal, Martial’s performances have been inconsistent. In the last four seasons, which have been marred by injuries, he has only managed to score 12 Premier League goals in 93 appearances. This season, he has struggled even more, scoring just one goal in 13 Premier League games and providing two assists across all competitions.
With Martial’s future uncertain, United have already been linked with a potential replacement for him. Ajax forward Brian Brobbey is reportedly on their radar, and manager Erik ten Hag is keen on reuniting with him. However, due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, a move for Brobbey was not possible in the January transfer window. But come summer, United might make their move for the talented Dutch striker who has already scored 17 goals this season.
It remains to be seen where Martial will end up after his contract expires, but one thing is for sure – he will have options in France, with Monaco and Marseille leading the race to sign him. As for United, they will have to carefully consider their attacking options and decide whether to go for a proven replacement like Brobbey or look elsewhere to strengthen their squad.
In the ever-evolving world of football transfers, the summer promises to be an exciting time for both Martial and United as they navigate through the possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead.
