Former Brighton & Hove Albion Striker Gerry Ryan Passes Away at 68
Former Brighton & Hove Albion striker Gerry Ryan has sadly passed away at the age of 68. Ryan, who joined the club from Derby County in 1978, made a total of 199 appearances for Brighton, scoring 39 goals.

Ryan’s impact extended beyond his time at Brighton, as he also represented the Republic of Ireland national team, earning 19 caps. During his international career, he played alongside notable players such as Liam Brady, who described Ryan as an “influential figure.”

Liam Brady, a former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder, reminisced about his time playing with Gerry Ryan. “Gerry was a wonderful teammate,” Brady said. “He was a very quick winger, very brave, and he took people on. We had some great games together and then we ended up on opposite sides, for Brighton and Arsenal, in the old First Division.”
Ryan played a pivotal role in Brighton’s promotion to the top flight and contributed significantly to the team’s efforts to maintain their position in the league. His performance in the FA Cup final against Manchester United was particularly memorable. Brady added, “He was fantastic in the FA Cup final against Manchester United and just loved playing for the club. Brighton & Hove Albion was in his heart, and he remained in the area for a long time.”

Gerry Ryan’s dedication to Brighton & Hove Albion extended beyond his playing career. He played a crucial role in Liam Brady’s appointment as manager, leveraging his connections with the club’s directors. Reflecting on their time together, Brady said, “We did a pretty good job in what were, of course, difficult circumstances, and I could see then just what Brighton meant to him – he was in love with the club so much.”
