# Fleetwood Sack Scott Brown as Manager After Poor Start to Season
Fleetwood have sacked Scott Brown as manager after 16 months in charge following a poor start to the season. The Cod Army have picked up just one point from their first six League One games and were beaten 2-1 at Charlton Athletic on Saturday. Brown’s assistant head coach Steven Whittaker has also left the Lancashire club, who sit second bottom of League One.
Fleetwood issued a statement to say that “Brown has left the club with immediate effect”. The statement added: “Following a difficult run of results the club reluctantly felt now is the right time to make a change to the first team management. Everyone at the club would like to place on record their thanks to Scott and Steven for their hard work and professionalism during their time at the club.”
Scott Brown was appointed as Fleetwood manager in June 2020, taking over from Joey Barton who had been in charge for two years. Brown had previously been assistant manager at Celtic, where he won nine trophies in his six-year spell. He also had spells as manager of Hibernian and Aberdeen.
Fleetwood had a relatively successful season last year, finishing 11th in League One. However, they have struggled this season, picking up just one point from their first six games. Their only point came in a 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers, while they have lost five of their opening six games.
The club have now decided to make a change and have appointed Simon Wiles as caretaker manager until a permanent replacement is found. Wiles was previously assistant manager at Fleetwood and has also had spells as assistant manager at Blackpool and Oldham Athletic.
The club are now searching for a new permanent manager and are expected to make an announcement in the coming weeks. Whoever takes over will face a tough task in trying to turn around Fleetwood’s fortunes this season.
Brown’s departure marks the end of an unsuccessful spell in charge of Fleetwood. He leaves the club second bottom of League One and with just one point from their opening six games. It remains to be seen who will be appointed as his replacement and whether they can turn around the club’s fortunes this season.
