Fikayo Tomori ‘man-marked Mohamed Salah out of a game’ and Chelsea urged to re-sign ‘superb’ centre-back after Serie A title win at AC Milan

Former Chelsea and Benfica defender Scott Minto has advised the Blues to try and bring Serie A winner Fikayo Tomori back to Stamford Bridge.

Tomori has tasted glory with AC Milan this season, winning the Scudetto as one of the Rossoneri’s most important players.

His performances have been rewarded with a recall to Gareth Southgate’s England squad, and Chelsea’s decision to sell the 24-year-old is starting to look questionable.

The Blues had previously loaned Tomori to Milan in the 2021 January transfer window and, after forcing his way into Stefano Pioli’s plans, he was signed permanently for £25million in the summer.

Chelsea could well live to regret that decision, especially with the departure of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen expected to follow him out the door, and doubts over the future of captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

And former left-back Minto says they should try and tempt Tomori back to Stamford Bridge.

Asked about the prospect of Tomori returning to Chelsea one day, Minto told Kick Off on talkSPORT: “I think he would be superb.

“I saw him at Derby and thought he was brilliant, he was Derby’s player of the year, and he lifted himself up whenever he played in a Chelsea shirt.

“I remember him almost man-marking Salah out of the game one time at the Bridge, he was superb, and he’s come on without a doubt.

“So give him another year, then bring him back. I’d say to him: ‘Look, have one more season, then do you fancy coming back to the Bridge?’”

Minto himself tried his hand at playing abroad, spending two years with Portuguese giants Benfica in the late 1990s.

Tomori may be set for a longer stay in Italy, and Minto has advised him to enjoy it before Premier League sides come beckoning.

He said: “If I was him I would enjoy the foreign experience for as long as possible, because it may never happen again, especially if you could go back to a club like Chelsea and stay there.

“You still need to get experience and Chelsea have got Thiago Silva there right now, but he’s probably got one year left in him. Trevoh Chalobah who’s done so well on top of that.

“So giving Tomori another year at AC Milan and then trying to get him back to Chelsea – I don’t see why not.”
