Enzo Fernandez: Chelsea are aiming for Premier League title this season
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has revealed that the club are aiming to win the Premier League title this season, along with the domestic cups, as expectations have changed since Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival as manager.
The Argentina international only arrived at Stamford Bridge in January, in the middle of a disastrous season for the club which saw them finish 12th in the Premier League. Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard all took charge of the Blues last season but Pochettino is now pulling the strings and Fernandez says things are very different.
The 22-year-old does not think that the woeful last campaign will stop Chelsea from returning to past glories and says they are aiming for the top once again, with a new, more aggressive attitude.
Enzo Fernandez: “Now We Have a New Head Coach, You Have to Say the Expectations of Us Have Changed”
“Now we have a new head coach, you have to say the expectations of us have changed,” Fernandez told B/R Football. “Obviously when I arrived, everything was difficult, there were lots of changes going on and everything happened so fast for me.
“But now the expectations have changed: we want to be an aggressive team, a team that attacks and defends well, that goes into every game to win it, whoever we’re playing against, and look to dominate every game we’re in. And obviously we want to try to win the Premier League, that’s our goal for this year. As well as that, I think the cups in England start in January, but the main aim this year is to win the Premier League.”
Mauricio Pochettino: “What We Want is to Bring the Happiness Again to This Great Football Club”
On his arrival at the club earlier this summer, Pochettino did not set specific targets, but said he wanted to bring happiness back to Chelsea through winning.
“What we want is to bring the happiness again to this great football club, working hard, playing in the way that the fans can enjoy football,” he said. “The history of Chelsea is to win. But it’s important also in the way that we are going to build up the victories – I think in the last 10, 12, 15 years Chelsea is the greatest team in England. I know very well the Premier League, I know very well what Chelsea means, the culture of Chelsea.”
Can Mauricio Pochettino Return Chelsea to Title Challengers?
It remains to be seen whether Pochettino can return Chelsea to title challengers this season. The Blues have already made some big signings this summer, including Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, and they will be looking to make a statement in their opening game against Brighton on Monday night.
Pochettino has already shown his intent by dropping Kepa Arrizabalaga in favour of Edouard Mendy for their friendly against Brighton last week and he will be hoping that his side can hit the ground running this season.
