# Lewis Ferguson Extends Contract with Bologna Until 2027
Scotland midfielder Lewis Ferguson has extended his contract with Bologna until June 2027, amid speculation linking him with other Serie A clubs. The 23-year-old moved from Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee last summer on an initial four-year deal, and has since gone on to make 33 appearances for the side, 28 of them starts.
Bologna have now announced that Ferguson’s new deal has “an option for a further one-year extension”. The midfielder has made an impressive start to life in Italy, scoring seven goals in his first season – the highest tally by a Scot in a single campaign there since Denis Law – including one in each of his final three league matches. This led to media reports linking him with AC Milan, Juventus and champions Napoli this summer, but it appears Ferguson is content to remain with Bologna for the foreseeable future.
## Ferguson’s Impressive Start to Life in Italy
Ferguson has been a key player for Bologna since joining last summer, making 33 appearances in his debut season and scoring seven goals in the process – the highest tally by a Scot in a single campaign there since Denis Law in the 1960s. He scored one goal in each of his final three league matches, which led to media reports linking him with AC Milan, Juventus and champions Napoli this summer.
The 23-year-old has six caps for his country and is seen as one of Scotland’s most promising young players, so it is no surprise that he is attracting interest from some of Italy’s biggest clubs. However, it appears that Ferguson is content to remain with Bologna for the foreseeable future, after signing a new contract that includes an option for a further one-year extension until June 2027.
## Bologna’s Ninth Place Finish Last Season
Ferguson’s impressive performances for Bologna have helped them to a ninth place finish in Italy’s top flight last season, despite the club having to contend with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic throughout the campaign. The club have also been able to strengthen their squad this summer, bringing in several new players including former Juventus midfielder Roberto Pereyra and ex-Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia, as well as extending Ferguson’s contract until 2027.
## Looking Ahead
With Ferguson now tied down to a long-term contract, Bologna can look forward to the midfielder continuing to play an important role in their midfield for the foreseeable future. The 23-year-old has already shown that he is more than capable of competing at the highest level in Italy, and with the club having strengthened their squad this summer they will be hoping to improve on their ninth place finish last season and challenge for European qualification in 2021/22.
