Atlanta Falcons Expect CB Jeff Okudah’s Ankle to Be Back Early in the Season

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith delivered some positive news regarding cornerback Jeff Okudah’s right ankle injury. After an MRI, the team expects Okudah to return early in the regular season.
Okudah sustained the injury during a 1-on-1 drill against receiver Frank Darby in Friday’s practice and had to be carted back to the locker room.
Smith expressed optimism about Okudah’s recovery, stating, “Positive news all things considered. We expect he’s got a great chance to be back in the really early part of the season. I just can’t give you whether that’s Week 1, 2, 3, but we feel really good for Jeff. All things considered.”
The Falcons utilized Tre Flowers and Mike Hughes as a combination at the first-team cornerback position opposite AJ Terrell during Saturday’s practice. Smith explained that this was part of their strategy to mix and match players and build depth. Flowers had taken the first-team reps on Friday following Okudah’s injury.
In April, Atlanta traded a fifth-round pick to the Detroit Lions for Okudah, who was the No. 3 pick in the 2020 draft. Despite dealing with injuries in the past two seasons, Okudah started 15 games for the Lions last year, recording 73 tackles and an interception.
Smith also provided an update on defensive lineman Calais Campbell, who has been on the non-football injury list. He mentioned that Campbell could be gradually reintroduced to practice next week, bringing him closer to a return.
“We have plans for everybody,” Smith said. “There’s a good chance next week we can ramp up a little more. What that looks like, I’ll know more on Monday. But we’re trending in the right direction.”
