Former Championship regular Florian Jozefzoon has made a strong case for the worst miss of all time. Playing for RKC Waalwijk in an Eredivisie match against Groningen, Jozefzoon had the simplest of tasks to score and even admitted that it was easier to score than to miss. However, he somehow managed to put the ball backwards through his legs, collapsing on the floor in shock. His manager and teammates were equally stunned, and everyone in the stadium had their hands on their heads.
The score was 0-0 and Waalwijk were hunting for European football when Mats Seuntjens spotted Jozefzoon with an empty net. Jozefzoon just needed to put the ball over the line, but he got his left foot on it and somehow managed to miss. “I received it immediately on my foot,” he said post-match. “Unfortunately I missed. I don’t know what happened to me. It was harder to miss the ball than to shoot it in, it can happen to anyone at some point. You shouldn’t dwell on it for too long. Luckily we won, that’s the most important thing.”
Despite Jozefzoon’s miss, Waalwijk went on to take a 2-1 victory, sparing his blushes. Jozefzoon has played for Brentford, Derby and Rotherham in the past, but this miss will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the worst ever.
