Chelsea have completed the signing of Monaco player Benoit Badiashile for a fee believed to be around £33m.

The young defender has signed a seven-and-a-half year contract at Stamford Bridge, and his arrival will provide a timely boost to the club’s season which has been in danger of unraveling under manager Graham Potter.

But exactly who is Chelsea’s new January signing?

Here is everything you need to know about the latest addition to the Blues squad.

Which clubs has he played for?

Badiashile signed his first professional contract with Monaco in February 2018, having spent his youth career at lower division sides Limoges and Malesherbes.

The Frenchman made his senior debut for the club in November of that year, featuring as a 17 year-old in the 4-0 defeat to PSG.

Since then, Badiashile has made 157 appearances for the club, scoring six goals in the process.

Last term, Badiashile started just 21 league games due to two separate hamstring injuries which caused him to miss almost three months of the season.

The 21 year-old only has limited Champions League experience with just two appearances in the competition to his name.

    What is his best position?

Badiashile has spent the entirety of his career at centre back.

Being left footed, Badiashile usually operates at left centre back in a four man defence, but is viewed as having the flexibility to also play in a back three.

At 6ft 4in, he is known for his aggression and supremacy in the air.

Last season, Badiashile ranked second for pass success rate (87.9%) and second for aerial success rate (77%) of all Monaco players in Ligue 1.

Which other clubs was he linked with?

Newcastle made a bid for Badiashile earlier in the year but the move was scuppered after he picked up an injury after talks had begun.

West Ham and Sevilla also showed an interest in signing him, but it is thought that the former Monaco man has always been keen on playing for a Champions League contender in the Premier League.

How many times has he played for France?

Badiashile has two French caps to his name, featuring twice for Les Bleus in the Nations League against Austria and Denmark in September 2022.

However, he was not included in Didier Deschamps’ final 26-man for the World Cup in Qatar.

He has also represented France at every youth level from U16 to U21.
