Everton thrashing by Minnesota United was ‘unforgivable’, insists club legend Kevin Campbell, as Neil Warnock insists Frank Lampard must take responsibility despite ‘decimated’ squad

It is rare that a pre-season defeat is met with the same dejection as a Premier League clash – but perhaps that sums up the current feeling around Everton.

The Toffees’ 4-0 defeat at the hands of MLS side Minnesota United in the early hours of Thursday morning has quickly reignited an air of despondency that clouded Goodison Park throughout the entirety of last season.

Everton boss Lampard lambasted his stars in the aftermath of the drubbing, claiming his players must show ‘fight to play in the team’ and that the drab display has given him ‘a lot to think about’.

Legendary manager Neil Warnock weighed in on Lampard’s troubles on Merseyside and insisted the Chelsea legend must take responsibility for the 4-0 thrashing.

“I don’t like listening to the words that Frank’s saying at the minute,” Warnock told talkSPORT.

“Last year, I felt a bit sorry for him if I’m honest. I didn’t think it was a job for a young man and he’s done well but he’s not had many disappointments in his career and you’ve got to learn from them.”

Warnock continued: “He hasn’t got a big squad and to lose his top scorer [Richarlison], he’ll be decimated but you’ve still got to organise your side and you can’t tell me the side he had out couldn’t have done better?

“Forget about the disappointment, he’s got to get on with his job now and think, ‘Right I’ll show them I can get a result with any team and anybody that’s in the team’.

“You look at his one to eleven – it isn’t bad. He should have got more out of that eleven that started.”

Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell was also quizzed on the club’s abject performance and described the manner of the defeat as ‘unforgivable’.

“If I’m honest, we have to look into this. Everton don’t have the consistency or the track record to put it aside as just a pre-season,“ Campbell said.

“The fact of the matter is, Everton have struggled, they’ve spent a hell of a lot of money over years gone by and they don’t really have anything to show.

“Pre-season you can lose games, but sometimes it’s the way you lose.

“The way Everton lost that game was unforgivable really and I think Frank Lampard wants to give some of these players a chance.

“But I honestly think he’s got to be going upstairs and saying, ‘You need to get me some players, you need to give me some money so I can get some moves done’.”

After the euphoria of leading the Toffees to top-flight survival just nine weeks ago, the knives are already sharpening for Lampard before a ball has even been kicked in Premier League.

Lampard will have to find a way to replace the goals of last season’s top scorer Richarlison

With the sale of top scorer Richarlison to Tottenham earlier this month and the vultures circling for prized asset Anthony Gordon amid financial fair play constraints, there could still be an unsettling summer ahead.

For now, former Burnley defender James Tarkowski represents Lampard’s only piece of transfer activity so far this summer.
