Sean Dyche and Duncan Ferguson, a former player and coach with the club, are also among the leading contenders.

Only goal difference prevents the Merseyside club from sitting bottom of the Premier League table following their 2-0 defeat at the London Stadium on Saturday.

That was Everton’s eighth loss in nine matches, leaving the Toffees with just 15 points from 20 matches.

Lampard took over a team 14th in the table and only managed to survive relegation last season on the penultimate day.

It was 1954 when Everton last played beneath the top flight of English football, and there is now a very real prospect they could be playing Championship football next season as things stand.

Bielsa has emerged as the new favourite to take over in the Goodison dugout, having seen his odds slashed from 3/1, leapfrogging Dyche for top spot with the bookies in the last 24 hours.

The former Leeds manager has been out of a job for the best part of a year, and did well with the Yorkshire side, finally getting them promoted in his second season in charge after 16 years outside the top flight.

The Argentinian then took the Whites to a ninth place finish in his first season back, and boasts an impressive CV elsewhere, having managed the likes of Argentina, Lazio, and Marseille in the past.

Next Everton manager odds (talkSPORT BET):

    • Marcelo Bielsa – 7/5
    • Sean Dyche – 2/1
    • Duncan Ferguson – 8/1
    • Wayne Rooney – 12/1
    • Ralph Hasenhuttl – 16/1
    • Sam Allardyce – 20/1
    • Lucien Favre – 20/1
    • Thomas Frank – 20/1
    • David Moyes – 20/1
    • Nuno – 20/1

Dyche, whose odds have now fallen slightly to 2/1 from 6/4, has been without a club since being sacked by Burnley towards the back end of last season, having spent just shy of 10 years at the Lancashire club.

The 51-year-old achieved promotion twice with the club and achieved their highest league position since 1974, even qualifying for European football for the first time since 1966.

Ferguson spent 10 years on Merseyside as a player for Everton over two spells, and a further 11 years as a staff member following his retirement, only leaving the role as Lampard’s assistant manager last summer.

The Scot has previously been appointed as caretaker boss for the Toffees on two occasions spanning a total of five matches, and is 8/1 to take over as permanent boss.

His most recent spell as caretaker boss saw him take charge of a 1-0 defeat at home Aston Villa following Rafa Benitez’s sacking 12 months ago.

Former Toffees player and boyhood fan Wayne Rooney, who currently manages DC United in the USA, is also in the running at 12/1, as is recently fired Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl at 16/1.
