Everton Appeals Red Card Given to Dominic Calvert-Lewin in FA Cup Match
Everton Football Club has officially appealed against the red card given to Dominic Calvert-Lewin during their goalless FA Cup third-round tie against Crystal Palace. The decision to appeal was made after Calvert-Lewin was shown a red card for a challenge with Nathaniel Clyne, where he had his studs up and made minimal contact with the Palace defender’s shin.
Notification to the Football Association
According to Everton, they have already notified the Football Association of their intention to appeal the red card decision. The club believes that the punishment is unjust and hopes to have it overturned.
Referee’s Decision and VAR Intervention
Initially, referee Chris Kavanagh did not take any action regarding the incident. However, upon reviewing the footage on the monitor following a recommendation from video assistant referee (VAR) Michael Salisbury, Kavanagh decided to show Calvert-Lewin a red card in the 79th minute of the match.
Manager’s Frustration with VAR
After the game, Everton manager Sean Dyche expressed his frustration with the use of VAR. He questioned the purpose of having a monitor if the outcome is always predetermined and criticized the lack of consistency in VAR decisions. Dyche remains a supporter of VAR but believes that it needs improvement to avoid testing his patience further.
