Euro 2024 Semi-Final Previews: France vs Spain and Netherlands vs England

Semi-Finals Preview: France vs. Spain

In the first semi-final match of Euro 2024, France will face off against Spain in Munich. Football expert Chris Sutton, who initially predicted France to win the tournament, finds himself torn between his prediction and his current location at Allianz Arena for Radio 5 Live. Sutton recalls his friendship with France’s coach Didier Deschamps during their time at Chelsea in 1999, where they used to play cards together. He notes that Deschamps’ team has been playing a cautious style of football, which is a departure from the usual flair and flamboyance associated with past French teams.

Sutton praises France’s defensive prowess, with William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, and Mike Maignan performing exceptionally well. However, he expresses disappointment in their attacking performance against Portugal, particularly Kylian Mbappe’s struggles to make an impact. On the other hand, Sutton lauds Spain as the team of the tournament, highlighting their impressive quarter-final win over Germany. Despite Spain’s suspensions and injury concerns, Sutton acknowledges their exciting players such as Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, along with midfield maestros Rodri and Fabian Ruiz. While logic suggests that Spain will triumph, Sutton has a hunch that France will find a way to win by stifling Spain’s attack.

Prediction: France 2-1 Spain

Semi-Finals Preview: Netherlands vs. England

The second semi-final match will see the Netherlands take on England in Dortmund. Sutton observes that Wout Weghorst’s physical presence was instrumental in the Netherlands’ comeback win against Turkey. He contrasts this with criticisms of England manager Gareth Southgate’s lack of decisiveness with substitutions. Sutton believes that Weghorst will be a threat to England, whether he starts or comes off the bench. Additionally, Sutton highlights Cody Gakpo as the Netherlands’ standout player, surpassing expectations and performing at his best in this tournament.

Sutton suggests that the Netherlands might switch to a three-man defense strategy against stronger teams, similar to their approach in previous matches. He also acknowledges England’s midfield strength compared to the Dutch duo of Jerdy Schouten and Tijjani Reijnders. However, Sutton notes that England’s attacking performance has been lackluster, relying on crucial moments rather than consistent play. He predicts that England will need individual brilliance once again to secure a victory. Despite this being England’s toughest match yet, Sutton believes they will prevail by a narrow margin.

Prediction: Netherlands 1-2 England
