Erling Haaland wins Premier League player of the month award as Manchester City striker is backed to score 50 goals this season

Erling Haaland could hit the 50-goal mark this season, Norway teammate Stefan Johansen believes.

The Manchester City striker is the Premier League Player of the Month for August thanks to a scintillating start to life at the Etihad Stadium.

Haaland has scored 13 goals in just eight games since his £52million arrival from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

His tally includes two hat-tricks and an incredible acrobatic strike on Wednesday evening to sink former club Borussia Dortmund.

QPR midfielder Johansen has talked up his compatriot and believes the 22-year-old could break all scoring records this season.

“He could end up scoring 50 plus this season – he’s incredible,” Johansen told talkSPORT.

“Just look at his goal tally already. I don’t want to put any pressure on him but he’s that good.

“I played with him for a few games with the national team and you know his finishing and his power.

“In every competition I think he can score so many goals this season. I’m not surprised one bit to be honest with you. I said to the boys in the team as well he’s gonna bang in goals even if it’s in England and he’s certainly done that already.”

Haaland’s technical attributes have been roundly discussed since his arrival, with many pointing to his efficiency in front of goal despite having minimal touches of the ball and little involvement in build-up play.

But former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell believes the Norwegian saves his energy levels for the key moments and that’s what makes him so difficult to defend against.

“He knows when to burst and when not to. He doesn’t get too involved in the link-up play and he preserves his energy,” he told talkSPORT.

“He has a one-track mind that says ‘I’m gonna score goals, I don’t mind having minimal touches but they are gonna be very prominent and important’ and he’s made a career of it right now. You deny him space, he can still score.”

Tony Cascarino also weighed in on Haaland’s magnificent start to life at City and waxed lyrical about his superb winner against former club Dortmund.

“He’s impossible to defend against,” the former Ireland striker told talkSPORT. “He’s got his foot above the head of the Dortmund defender. How do you stop that?

“The big thing as well if you’re just thinking about Premier League club football – he’s got no World Cup.

“Norway are not there so if anyone’s gonna get rest and get himself tuned up for the second part of the season, it’s gonna be Erling Haaland. So expect the worst, that’s what I’d say.”
