The title race between Arsenal and Manchester City is heating up, and the battle between Erling Haaland and Rob Holding could be key in deciding who comes out on top. William Saliba’s absence due to a back injury has been a major factor in Arsenal’s recent stuttering form, as they have conceded nine goals in the five games he has missed. This is in stark contrast to their defensive record when the Frenchman is in the line-up. Haaland, who has scored 32 league goals this season, is a luxury that City don’t need, with World Cup-winning striker Julian Alvarez as back-up. Holding, Saliba’s understudy, has not been convincing at the top level, having only made 96 league appearances in seven seasons with Arsenal. He was given a torrid afternoon by Michail Antonio in the draw with West Ham and appeared to be partially responsible for two of Southampton’s goals last time out. Mikel Arteta has shown faith in Holding by persisting with the £50million Ben White at right-back, despite White being signed as a centre-back. Arteta spoke of finding solutions to City’s attacking prowess, which may involve a change in formation, tactics or personnel. Whatever the approach and outcome, the fact that Arsenal find themselves in this situation highlights the advantage City still hold over their rivals for the title.
