Everybody loves the start of a new football season, but there’s one other moment that tends to trump anything that happens on-field.
Of course we’re talking about new signing initiations.
Settling into life at a new club can be daunting and sometimes players just need a little bit of a push to break the ice with their new teammates.
What better way to do that than by being forced to sing in front of all of your new friends?
With a pre-season trip to the US designed to get the squad up to speed ahead of the new campaign, Phillips revealed the way he and his fellow new arrivals were introduced to their teammates.
He told Sky Sports: “I did my initiation song for the first time in front of the whole Man City lot.
“It was quite good, I was voted the best singer, which isn’t too bad. I’d been practising all day in my room!

“I sang George Ezra, Budapest. I’m not really a singer, I was just practicing all day in my room and everyone else must have just thought I sounded good, but I didn’t.
“To be honest, I wasn’t too nervous. I just wanted it over and done with, but there was some good songs last night as well.
“Erling’s was probably the best performance. He had everybody up and waving their hands. He sang Hero by Enrique Iglesias.
“He went for it, but he was actually really, really good as well!
“Julian sang Despacito, which was nice. It was a good vibe to it. He was a little bit stiff, but he was a bit nervous.
“Stefan [Ortega] was really good. He had his top off and was swinging it around his head and everything!
“There was some good songs and it was a good night because we had some nice food and a good time together.”
Pep Guardiola will be hoping his new signings will be similarly on-song when City kick off their Premier League title defence in August.
