Erik ten Hag has urged Marcus Rashford to extend his stay at Old Trafford to help make Manchester United the ‘best team’ in the world again.
The Red Devils forward, who is tied down at the Theatre of Dreams until 2024, is attracting interest from French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Rashford is in the form of his life having scored nine goals in as many games since the World Cup.
It is understood that United and the England international are in talks over a new contract, with the club having to likely to break their ‘Ronaldo Rule’ which limits player’s salaries to £200,000-a-week.
Speaking in his press conference on Tuesday ahead of United‘s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag was asked how important was it that the club keep Rashford.
To which he said: “I think he understands Man United is his club, that’s first but also, in this environment, in this team, I think he is playing his best football.
“He is improving and that is about him because he’s working on the good things.
“He is giving 100 per cent energy in it and he has a good plan and I think also in this team he can bring his qualities.
“So this team can help him be in the right position and to score goals, which he is good at.
“This team is constructed that his qualities come to the fore and I think he knows that.
“But, definitely yes, he is important for us and if we want to get the success we want – we need him.”
Commenting on PSG‘s interest in Rashford, Ten Hag stated it was a compliment to the player and United.
He remarked: “I hope that all our players can have interest from clubs because that means you do a good job, [that] the team is outperforming so that is what we are aiming for.
“Then, I would say this is the best place to be because we want to construct the best team, first in England, then in Europe then in the world.”
Providing an update on Rashford’s situation, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook revealed: “I think at the moment it’s just the financial aspect of this new contract that needs to be ironed out.
“He’s got 18 months left because United triggered a one-year extension, but they’ve got this so-called ‘Ronaldo Rule’ in place.
“They don’t want any one player to be earning dramatically more than another so it upsets the harmony in the dressing room.
“I think with Marcus Rashford they are going to have to go quite a way and beyond their £200,000-a-week salary cap because he is sought after.
“There’s definite interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Erik ten hag and Manchester United don’t want to lose him.”
